Raised Home Spray Foam Near Port Vincent, LA: Subfloor and Attic Job

This raised home near Port Vincent in Livingston Parish got spray foam in two places: closed cell foam under the floor and open cell foam on the attic roof deck. Here's what we did on this job and why, with photos from the house.

The house: a raised home with an open crawl space

The home sits up on block piers with an open crawl space underneath, and the attic holds the air handler and ductwork. That's a common setup around Port Vincent, French Settlement and the rest of Livingston and Ascension Parish. It means two areas need attention: the floor, which is exposed to outdoor air from below, and the attic, where the HVAC equipment lives.

Under the house: closed cell spray foam on the subfloor

When we spray foam under a house, we always remove the existing insulation first. Then we spray closed cell foam directly to the underside of the subfloor, between the floor joists. About 2 inches of closed cell is our standard, but every job is unique, and we set the plan for each house during the site visit.

We use closed cell under raised floors because it's the dense, rigid type of spray foam, and the underside of a raised home is open to outdoor air.

In the attic: open cell spray foam on the roof deck

Up top, open cell foam goes on the underside of the roof deck instead of on the attic floor. That puts the insulation at the roofline, so the air handler and ductwork end up inside the insulated space instead of sitting in a hot attic.

On attic jobs, our standard process is to remove the old insulation, bag it and vacuum it out, then spray 5.5 to 6 inches of open cell foam on the roof deck. Customers usually don't need to empty the attic first. In most cases we protect stored items with plastic, and if something is too much or in the way of doing the job safely, we move it for you.

Every job starts with a site visit

No two houses are the same. Crawl space height and access, what's in the attic, the condition of the old insulation and the layout of the ductwork all change the plan. That's why we look at the house in person before giving a free estimate, and we'll go over things like attic contents and prep during that visit.
